On June 5, the IOFI team was an integral part of a seminar hosted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Confederation of India Food Trade and Industry (CIFTI). Over 75 Indian food business operators (FBOs) and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) attended the half-day session “Creating awareness among FBOs and SMEs on flavorings, safety evaluations of flavors and emerging trends in food flavorings ecosystem.”
Dr Cachet provided an introduction to the “world of flavorings” with an historical perspective, definitions and differences between flavorings and food additives, insights on the creation and innovation of flavorings and their applications and benefits in foods and beverages and a primer on global regulations that govern the proper use of flavorings.
Dr. Taylor explained the various safety evaluation programs employed by the US, Europe and globally via the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) along with best practices for the safe use of flavorings. Dr. Cachet explained the IOFI Code of Practice.
Throughout the seminar, the IOFI representatives sat on panels with delegates from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), FICCI, CIFTI and the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI).
This initiative continues IOFI’s efforts to provide support to the global flavor industry.
